The Hard Truth for the Spartan Community:
Spartans, oh Spartans, where are you? If you care about the server, you will read this entire message but if you cannot, then you do not care nor have you ever cared. Spartans do not give up on Sparta, they do not stop caring. We will be discussing a lot in this message, a lot of this information is important for you to read. If you don’t care to read it, don’t expect the right to complain about the status or condition of the server or the staff team. Show us who cares, we want to know. We want to see the Real Spartans!
Please tell us what to do. We have tried to hire Head Admins to help with the work of a reset. This was something new and very risky for us and we hired all of the Head Admins that went through the whole application process. Currently NONE of the HA’s are doing any work on the server. All of the other Staff are not responding. We haven’t had any new applications for any of the staff positions in who knows how long. We have nobody in the community with the will to step up and help out. Don’t say you have tried, because if you did you would have applied for staff. Some of those here were staff, and we as always thank you for your service to the community and the server. But even if you were staff when we were doing the resets… did you actively ask for projects to do? I can tell you that for most of you that answer is no.
If there are people out there who think they can get the resets out and completed, please step up. We would me more than happy to check your application and if you pass the application process, we will set you up with a test server where you can work on the reset. There are lots of things on a server that expects to last any significant amount of time that needs to be though, most of these things are items that we have already decided upon, even if the community doesn't agree upon them. There are tough decisions that need to be made in all cases and it is rough that we had to be the ones making them.
Yes, the Survival reset was started some time last year, however when the director team was formed in March, we decided to start everything from scratch in terms of resets. One of the first tasks we had to do was redesigning the staff team and structure. This was done rather quickly, but this was first because it is the framework for the whole server and what we are expected to do at each staff level. After this we had started the work on the survival server. Around mid May, the eula blacklist came around and servers were actually getting blacklisted, however we decided to continue going until we were blacklisted. At this point we were almost ready to reset, we went all the way to actually making a post on the front page about a reset coming and we estimated we were about a week away from one. Shortly after we heard that it was taking quite a long time to get off of the blacklist. With all kinds of drama in and around the minecraft community due to this EULA stuff we were forced into this holding pattern… waiting until other servers tried things and we found out what worked and what doesn't. Around the end of May or early June, we had no choice but to to go compliant which required us to completely redo a lot on survival. We were fairly clear in saying how we were constantly contacting Mojang about these changes and were asking for some guidelines. Mojang was very back and forth on all of this and never gave responses that were consistent with one another. All of the VIP perks needed to be reworked and the whole new idea for the survival server didn’t work anymore, which caused lots of reworking of the config files that were previously done.
I do not think the community completely realizes how much time and effort we spend on just trying to make you happy. We spent lots of the time we had available trying to make sure those who helped the server by donating to it stay happy and we still show our thanks to them. In these efforts, we had to get new plugins made so that we can insure more people donate, because that is how the server stays alive, and also the past donators are happy because they are the people we rely on to have a passion for and play on the server. Making plugins like this also takes more time (do you see a trend yet?).
In middle of June, 1.10 was released and with new minecraft version releases, bukkit must update their version to the newest minecraft version which can take a while, THEN developers have to update their plugins to the newest version of bukkit/spigot which again can take awhile depending on what was changed and how active the developer is. Majority of plugins were finished by the end of July but there were still a few that did not finish until mid August. Around this time we opened applications for Head Admin, and we had gotten 3 Head Admin’s... one for survival, skyblock and pvp. Also in Mid-august school starts up and we have many staff members starting or in college, and many in upper grade levels where studying becomes very important. Due to this, many staff members had to cut down their availabilities and we lost even more ground on the server. Due to school, two of the HA’s that we hired shortly retired due to the workload of the server and school. The third has not retired, yet, however is too busy to really help. We hired another skyblock head admin, that has since gone MIA. So, now it is basically down to the Directors who have school and jobs next to working on the server. We realize this whole thing is a bunch of excuses, but that is life. We have tried our best to stay on top of things and we just kept getting set back. It is really hard to get motivated when you keep getting knocked down. Not to mention the community who is completely against the staff team. Again there are some people who may disagree and blame this on the staff, well this is again just furthering our frustrations with the community. There are so many people and puzzle pieces that need to fit in and there are only so many free minutes of our lives to work on putting the puzzle together.
I don’t think the community understands that we don’t like letting you down as much as you hate that we keep saying things that don’t end up happening. We couldn’t expect the setbacks that were thrown our way. Unfortunately, as stated above, there is only so much that two people can do. Sure, there may be other servers who had the same problems that we had and have reset, but did you ever stop and think to yourself, “How many people are working for those resets? How many people are helping push those servers out? Or how their availability might be compared to orus? Or how working on minecraft server(s) is their full time job?” We, the Directors, could retire, but would that help Spartan? We have had Head Admin applications open for roughly 3 months now, we have had only 5 people apply for that position. Some claim why don’t we step down and let others take our spot but who is there to take our spots when only 5 people applied for a high level position such as Head Admin. You’re all welcome to apply but before you do, consider or think about how you treat us and how you could be getting the same hate. I mean, isn’t that why most of you won’t apply?
We understand your concerns and feelings about the excuses and we know that some of you will continue to be negative and try to pick apart this entire message to try to make us look wrong or like the bad guys however that is not the case, he have been doing our best from the beginning. Some claim that we aren’t taking your suggestions or thoughts into consideration but we have, you just don’t see why some won’t work. We are getting nowhere with the constant hate and will continue getting nowhere until someone decide to step forward and help out, we have had many people help out who weren’t staff in the past (ie. Zombomb) and currently no one is trying to help, but you think you have the right to sit there and complain about something that you are not trying to help with? No, that’s not the case. The ability to complain is a right earned through action. If you do not act, you do not have the right to complain about those who are doing what they can. This valuable throughout life not only for a minecraft server and we highly suggest you ponder long and hard about the message we are trying to convey.
If you feel like you can honestly help or that you want to honestly help, please step forward and show us that you care, show us that you want to help. You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take and you learn from all of the shots you do take. We need your help, we have tried asking the community for help but we constantly got hate for everything. How do we continue asking for help from such a negative community? We are still trying, even through the negativity, we are still here and we are still trying. Do you want to see Spartan back up on it’s feet? Do you have the ability to help? Do you think you can handle the hate? We want to make a positive community but that does not happen overnight nor does it happen by the work of a few people, it happens because the entire community wants it to happen. Wouldn’t you want a positive and enjoyable community rather than the harsh and negative community we currently have? I think that almost anyone would. So please tell us, what do you think we are to do in this position. We have lots of work to do, nobody to do the work, a community that has given up all hope, and constant staff distrust/hate.
